Note: this is an archived copy of Paul Routenburg's excellent Killed By Hype site which was previously located at http://plaza.powersurfr.com/paul/punk.html and http://ca.geocities.com/kbd77@rogers.com/punk.html. It contains a lot of great information about punk records so I decided to keep it alive here after the demise of GeoCities.

Teenage Treats Series

Another series featuring predominantly UK records that began in 1997. These LPs tend to be more powerpop oriented with some punk mixed in. I had never seen or heard of Volume 1 until I saw it mentioned in the liner notes of Volume 2 where it says it was a very limited issue. At the end of 1998 Volume 1 became widely available though I've been told that this is a remastered version of the original Volume 1 that did come out in a very limited edition. The series ended in 2000 with volumes 8, 9 and 10 released as a group, each in an edition of only 100 copies.

Teenage Treats Volume 1

Slightly above average, mostly powerpop obscurities. Killers, Razar, Wasps, Tours and Apartment are all worthwhile. The Wasps and Tours are repeated on Volume 2. There was a very limited first edition of this LP and a more widely available (as of the end of 1998) remastered version. I haven't a clue how you would tell the 2 apart having never seen the original version.
Rating: 7.5.

Teenage Treats Volume 2

Some good tracks but this is mostly a powerpop record. If you're looking for raw, lo-fi, unproduced, screaming punk obscurities, go somewhere else. The Red Rage track is about as close to punk as you'll get.
Rating: 7.5.

Teenage Treats Volume 3

A very good LP, with the Surgeons, Dregs, Exits and 3 tracks from the Voxhall Tracks EP. More punk than Volume 2.
Rating: 8.

Teenage Treats Volume 4

More of a powerpop sound than Volume 3. Some interesting osbcurities though like the Tunnelrunners, Voice of the Puppets and the Hobbs.
Rating: 7.5.

Teenage Treats Volume 5

Other than the Exits and Bleach Boys this LP is pretty unmemorable. None of the obscurities are classics by any stretch of the imagination.
Rating: 6.5.

Teenage Treats Volume 6

A lot of obscurities here. Interesting to listen to once or twice but with a few exceptions not especially great. Includes a few truly wimpy pop tracks.
Rating: 7.

Teenage Treats Volume 7

Still more obscurities! More punk (at least as this series goes) and overall better than #6. One of the better volumes of the series, so far.
Rating: 8.

Teenage Treats Volume 8

A few of these are already well known, but overall an excellent collection of more obscurities. Quite punk, at least as this series goes. Only 100 copies made so you might have missed it by now.
Rating: 8.

Teenage Treats Volume 9

After 9 of these you should know what to expect by now. A couple of lame ones managed to sneak though but still a worthwhile LP. 100 copies were available.
Rating: 7.5.

Teenage Treats Volume 10

Similar in sound to Volume 9. There are quite likely still enough UK obscurities out there for another 10 volumes, but this is the end of the road for this series. A fine one it was, too. 100 copies of this one as well, so you likely blinked and missed it.
Rating: 7.5.
