Over the years I've become fond of Japanese punk, especially the Star Club, Stalin, Anarchy, Friction and The Mods. Friction is in the art-punk vein, except for the 2 7"s and the first LP. E.D.P.S. was lead by Tsunematsu Masatoshi (ex-Friction) and is also into the art-punk side of things I guess. The Mods have later releases than what I've listed here. I haven't heard them but I don't think they are very good anyway. The Star Club are mostly excellent punk rock. If you can find the compilation CD it would be a good place to start. The Stalin Trash LP is legendary and while it is very good, maybe not quite up to the legend. There are also counterfeit copies of it around so be careful before dropping a load of cash for it. Aburadako are also a good band, mixing punk, art and hardcore in varying amounts. Michiro Endo (from Stalin) has put out a number of releases, most of them pretty good. Not entirely punk (there is some glamrock, art and the like mixed in) they are still interesting. The Gozira label released 7"s from the Mirrors, Mr. Kite, Flesh, Maria 023, and Tsunematsu Masatoshi. All are pretty good and can be found on the Crack! CD compilation, which also includes live tracks. The Gozira Special LP is almost the same but doesn't have all the tracks from the 7"s and it has a couple different live tracks. The Tokyo Rockers and Tokyo New Wave LPs are both good. The "New Wave" one isn't at all new wave. Too bad more new wave didn't sound like this. A compilation CD recently came out compiling tracks from bands on the Pass label. Much of it is arty sounding but still good. Less well known but still interesting are Speed and the Roosters. I'm generally not much of a fan of Japanese hardcore. Kikeiji, Masturbation and the first Comes LP I like but that's about as far as it goes.
